Manapouri Grove is your opportunity to join a thriving suburb. Welcome to Kelson.

Access to this strong-spirited community is convenient off State Highway 2, with Major Drive providing a wide and easy driving experience, with regular bus services available. This tight-knit, welcoming community is supported by the Kelson Community Association - a group of like-minded Kelson residents proactive in maintaining and expanding what Kelson has to offer.

Kelson is a recreation playground, with Belmont Regional Park offering walkers and cyclists tracks to Boulder Hill, and World War 2 bunkers scattered around the hillside. Speedy’s Reserve at the bottom of Kelson is a picnic paradise and is maintained and improved by local volunteers. The suburb boasts two primary schools, a kindergarten, community hall, church, Children’s Day Care centre, dairy, and a selection of takeaways.

Past to present

Kelson was named after George Kells (the original landowner) and his son Bill. Both were instrumental in the development of the suburb during the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring streets of well-known South Island towns and cities, the length of the street name is relative to the length of the street.

Kelson was originally advertised in 1961 as ‘the gateway to a new suburb.’ The lower parts of the suburb were built during the 1960s and opened up further in the 1970s. During this time, the sprawling development was described as the fastest-growing suburb in Lower Hutt.

Homes in Kelson became increasingly more popular when the Kennedy Good bridge was built across the Hutt River in 1979. The bridge created an easy link from Kelson to Avalon Park, and other amenities such as Naenae College, Naenae Pool and the Park Ave suburban shops.

Kelson is a great example of good urban design with the main road, Major Drive, featuring a wide median strip. Off this spine, a series of quaint groves and well-maintained properties helps build the neighbourly community. Manapouri Grove is leveraging off the work of the original Kelson planners and lifting the standard to another level again. The roads in Manapouri Grove have been sculpted into nice contours and lines. The homes have been designed and chosen with careful consideration of how the final streetscape will look.

Every garden at Manapouri Grove is designed by a landscape architect and planted before the new owner moves in. Buyers can enjoy an easy lifestyle from day one and have confidence that neighbouring gardens will be established with the same care and investment.

Resale demand in Kelson continues to outstrip supply with many residents enjoying Kelson so much that they stay a long time. The 2020s will see Kelson again become one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Lower Hutt.
